Food for thought: Growth is Disguised as Development: The Illusion of Short-Term Gain

Was reading about patterns in the Indian Economy, and the phsycology of Indians;

and a genuine question came into my mind;

Ever wondered how we're mistaking short-term spikes for genuine progress? 🤔

Let me share a hard truth: Our economy is playing a dangerous game of optical illusions, where growth masks deep-rooted systemic issues.

Take a closer look:

• Wedding Expenditure Paradox: Our GDP "growth" gets a temporary boost from lavish weddings, often funded by dowry - a practice that commodifies relationships while draining family resources. We celebrate economic activity but ignore the social cost.

• Education vs. Celebration: Families will spend lakhs on a single wedding, but hesitate to invest in quality education. A ₹20 lakh wedding becomes a status symbol, while ₹5 lakh for higher education seems "expensive".

• Real Estate Inflation: Property prices rise, creating an illusion of wealth. But for most young professionals, this means:

- Unaffordable housing

- Massive EMIs

- Delayed life milestones

• EMI-driven-Consumption-Driven Growth: We're celebrating increased smartphone sales and digital consumption, but how many of these purchases translate to productive skills or economic mobility?

There are tens of similar examples.

The truth is painful: We're building a house of cards, mistaking noise for progress, and short-term excitement for sustainable development.

Will keep on adding more in this context, like how the education spending of China established it globally and how India is failing drastically in this regard!

What do you think? Are we truly developing, or just creating an elaborate illusion? 👇
