Demagogic Marketing

LinkedIn woke up today with posts filled with newspaper cuttings, of the advertisement of Boat, taking a dig at Apple. Showcasing its "Better" features at a fraction of the price.

And Then came the audience applauding an "Indian" brand, taking over a Foreign MNC.

This made me think about some recent examples where companies are appeasing the Patriotic sentiment of Indian consumers to drive their sales growth in the country.

This is not only done by Indian Companies but also by Foreign Companies.

For Ex - Last month; the Founder, Co-Founder, and the company social media handles of Tech Brand "Nothing" added the suffix "BHAI" to their name, which was a marketing strategy to promote their new launch of Phone 2a. To my surprise, they even succeeded, many techies on the platform followed them by changing their names.

This Marketing to appease the audience to reach your goal can be referred to as "Demagogic Marketing" which is used by many - ranging from politicians to salesmen.

This arises from the basic nature of human being which can be seen in a newborn also.

The campaign by Boat is not directly an example of "Demagogic Marketing" but is perceived so by the audience.

Few more ways can be, by appeasing the Health-Conscious sentiment, Religious Sentiment, Motivation/Fake Confidence, Sustainability/Ethical Value.

This kind of Marketing is also done to manipulate the prudence of the audience by selling some mediocre and not-worth-it products like - Freedom 251, MLM companies, Patanjali Ayurvedic Products, The Infamous vote bank politics, etc.

Ps - This post in no way demean Boat, even I feel proud of an Indian brand making products for Indians. I like the marketing campaigns of Boat - Be it today, or their Women's day posts.

This is just my way to learn and share learnings from the OGs of their industries.
