Na-Ion Batteries, the next gold mine?
Na-ion batteries, the next gold mine?
Let's discuss what Na-ion batteries are, their pros and cons, how they can play in the future, and Which companies are investing in them.
Basically, Na-ion batteries use Sodium available in abundance (Salt Water etc.) on earth instead of Lithium used in Lithium-ion batteries.
Benefits over Li-Ion Batteries:-
1. Cost - Sodium is less expensive than lithium, and sodium-ion batteries are cheaper than lithium-ion batteries
2. Charging: Sodium-ion batteries can charge to almost 100% in 20 minutes.
3. Stability: Sodium-ion batteries are stable at extreme temperatures and are safe against overheating.
4. Safety: Sodium-ion batteries are safer than lithium-ion batteries.
5. Power delivery: Sodium-ion batteries have similar power delivery characteristics to li-ion batteries
6. The sodium-ion battery technology provides a prolonged lifespan with 80% capacity retention over 3000-6000 cycles and quicker charging capabilities in comparison to lithium-ion batteries (KPIT)
7. This new technology is set to lower the cost of electric vehicle batteries, with an anticipated reduction of 25-30% compared to existing lithium-ion batteries (Inc42).
Their major disadvantage is that their energy density is substantially lower than that of the latest lithium-ion batteries.
Use Cases in Future :-
-Providing backup power for telecom companies
-Storing excess energy generated by renewable resources like wind and solar
-Sodium-ion batteries are also being considered for low-speed electric vehicles, such as electric bikes, scooters, and rickshaws.
