Spark #3 - Soft Power, India and the World!!

The week full of India-America relationship posts. Huh!!
I thought of writing something related to Geo-Politics and here I am, today let's know about Soft Power.

Soft Power is basically an influence on others to get something done without force.

It includes cultural expressions like literature, art, fashion, and cuisine that a country uses to influence global perceptions and preferences.

In contrast, Hard power refers to the use of military force, economic coercion, and tangible resources to achieve political objectives in international relations.

Let's understand Soft Power better with examples:-

Anime - Soft Power of Japan
Bollywood - Soft Power of Japan
Hollywood, brands like Coca-Cola, McDonald's and Apple are part of the USA's soft power.
Also, promoting democracy, human rights, and freedom of speech are part of the Soft power of the USA.

India had seen a huge increase in its soft power in the last decade, especially during Covid.

How?
COVID - India emerged as the "pharmacy of the world" by supplying millions of vaccine doses to various nations, particularly through the COVAX initiative. This act of global solidarity and humanitarian assistance not only contributed to saving lives but also projected India's capabilities and commitment to global health.

By sharing vaccines, India demonstrated its scientific expertise and manufacturing capacity, establishing itself as a reliable and responsible global player. This act of generosity generated goodwill and strengthened India's international standing. It showcased India's commitment to addressing a global crisis and exemplified its values of compassion and solidarity. The provision of vaccines positioned India as a trusted partner in global health efforts and enhanced its soft power, fostering positive perceptions and relationships with nations across the world.

Yoga and Ayurveda - Yoga and Ayurveda, India's treasures, have gained global popularity. The international celebration of Yoga Day since 2015 on June 21st further highlights their global influence.

Spiritual and Philosophical Traditions -  India's culture and traditions, rooted in spiritual practices like Vedanta, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism, etc., have attracted practitioners and followers globally.

Here comes the Igniting question - How does Soft Power work?

Soft power is all about influencing others without using force. It's like making friends and convincing them to agree with you. It works by understanding how people think and feel. Soft power uses things like culture, values, and communication to make a good impression and connect with people. It's about appealing to their emotions and making them feel like they belong. By doing this, soft power gains their admiration and trust, so they willingly agree with what you want them to do.

The key is to be friendly, understanding, and persuasive. Soft power shows examples and tells stories that people can relate to. It doesn't try to force or control anyone. Instead, it seeks to build positive relationships and influence people's thoughts and actions in a gentle and respectful way.

In the context of the United States, soft power is amplified through the influence of its big companies on a global scale. American corporations, such as Apple, Google, Microsoft, and Coca-Cola, possess significant soft power due to their global recognition and impact. These companies not only provide products and services but also project American culture, values, and innovation worldwide. Through their widespread presence, they create positive associations with the United States and shape perceptions of American excellence, progress, and creativity.

That's all for today.
